Pray You Don’t End Up at: The Last House on The Left – Dennis Iliadis, 2009

Little-known horror movie director Wes Craven had people leaving the cinema in their droves when he released the original 1972 film “Last House on the Left”. Not because it lacked quality but because the subject matter was hard to handle. This stomach-churning remake is no picnic either. Survival is the key when escaped convicts turn on some holidaymakers out in the woods.

Remake of Wes Craven’s nasty little 1972 shocker about a family on vacation that are forced to confront some of their deepest and darkest fears when their daughter finds herself on the wrong side of the lake after giving in to peer pressure from an irresponsible friend. There is a dangerous criminal on the loose who has no care about who he hurts or how he does it as, following a daring escape orchestrated by members of his crew, he seeks to keep his face out of the public eye.

Characters faced similar peril in Wes Craven’s “The Hills Have Eyes” (1977). The poster above is for the remake of that mid-70s chiller (Alexandre Aja, 2006). Image via Wikipedia

Before he struck gold with ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ (1984), the majority of Wes Craven’s early films had been banned in various countries due to the acuteness of the violence which took place in them and the unsuspecting people upon whom they had been inflicted, mostly middle-class white families as in the original version of this film and ‘The Hills Have Eyes’ (1977). The films represented the carnal fears of any (American) family.

Violent and hard to watch at times, Last House on The Left is a decent shocker that again challenges the average person to go beyond those boundaries in order to ensure survival or at least give oneself and loved ones a chance in the face of monstrous human beings prepared to do anything to remain free. Another one for the ‘evil that men do’ file. We can be so cruel to one another can’t we?
