Phanact’s Essay
The novella, Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, was based on a society that had advanced so much they reverted back to olden days. In this society everyone was considered equal. People were assigned jobs for life that was unhelpful towards advancing society.
People were given ‘life tasks’, which were jobs for life, which completely contradicted their likes and personality. They were also taught that everything outside of their society was wasted. Also, that there were monsters outside of their society that would eat them if they left. They were surrounded by a forest called the Uncharted Forest. Everything was put back in its original state. They were controlled by fear.
In The Matrix the society in that film was completely computer generated. It was all caused by our society advancing too much. We decided to create an Artificial Intelligence which then decided to take over the world. It then created a computer generated world which was modeled after the world before the A.I. was created.
From that a few people were able to understand that the world they were in was not completely real. They were able to break free. Neo, the main character and also the Chosen One, was taught by Morpheus about how to leave the matrix. Morpheus’s name comes from the god of dreams and he is the captain of the human ship, the Nebuchadnezzar. He told Neo about how to leave the matrix, the name for the computer generated world.
Both of these stories are related in many ways. In both societies the people living in them didn’t know what was around them and what was really going on. The people in the matrix didn’t know that they were in a computer. In the anthem the people living in the society believed that it was unsafe to leave. In both of these stories the main character is able to break free from the society they were living in a find a new society to live in.
In Anthem, Equality had discovered something from the unmentionable times. He had discovered the entire sewer system of the city in which their society lives. It was the reason that he stayed alone every night that he discovered what he had to do in order to leave their society. In the Matrix, Neo was able to break away from the matrix by basing everything he knew around computers .This caught the attention of Morpheus. Morpheus knew that Neo was the chosen one and was able to help him get out of the matrix.
One major difference between Anthem and the Matrix is that Neo had gotten help in order to leave the matrix. Equality was able to leave his society without having any help, even though he had left with his woman friend who ends up being his wife. Once he left he renamed her Gaia, Mother of Earth, and renamed himself Prometheus after the Greek god of knowledge.
