So now that it’s all said and done I just wanted to put this out there. Hollywood and the Oscars are just a popularity and marketing contest. The best film doesn’t always win best film and the best actors don’t always win the best actors. It’s complete bullshit but for some reason it’s still really important… to Hollywood.
I’m just going to mention the big awards here.
Best picture
winner – The King’s speech
what should have won – 127 hours.
The King’s speech was ok… good at best, boring at the worst. 127 Hours was spectacular from start to finish. For a movie where 3/4 of it is a guy trappe under a rock they pulled it off brilliantly. I haven’t been so emotionally invested with a character at any other movie that year. It was brilliant. Just like the King’s speech it was based on a true story except instead of a man overcoming his stutter a man overcomes what would be for most an agonizing death. 127 Hours shines a true light on the human experience and what it means to be alive and stay alive.
Best actor
winner – Colin Firth
who should have won – James Franco
Like a mentioned above 3/4 of the movie is stuck under a rock. There’s no one else to act off of. It was all Franco and he pulled it off. I felt like I was right there with him the entire time and when he started to take his arm off I was all “no man don’t do it…” but at the same time “yeah! do it! get the hell outta there!”
actor in a supporting role
winner- Christian Bale
who should have won – Christian Bale
He was flawless in the fighter. Hard to imagine that that junkie on screen is also freaking Batman!
Actress in a leading role
winner – Natalie Portman
who whould have won – Natalie Portman
This was her best role since ‘the professional’ nuff said
Actress in a supporting role
winner – Melissa Leo
who whould have won – Melissa Leo
the Fighter was filled with amazing acting and this is another example of it.
Best Directing
winner – The King speech
who should have won – Social network
Fincher did some masterful work here. Both films are heavy dialogue but the biggest difference was that Fincher was able to take the boring (sitting at a computer) and made it engaging to watch.
Best Documentary
winner – inside job
what should have won – Exit through the gift shop
Inside job was nothing new. Hell we all lived through it and are still dealing with right this minute. Any one could have made this documentary pointing the finger at Wall street and screaming “Fuck you!. Exit through the gift shop though was amazing. Does art mimic life or is life itself art? It was like falling down the rabbit hole and emerging in this strange world where everything looks exactly like the world we live in until it suddenly spins on a dime and turns into a world we cannot recognize. The characters were strange and wacky and they exposed a side of life and art that few have seen before and even fewer have actually lived.
Original Score
winner- Social network
what should have won – Inception
Social network was very understated in terms of music in my opinion where as Inception… wow. The music itself influenced the scene and brought the entire thing to another level. Zimmerman was at his best here.
Adapted screenplay
winner – Social network
what should have won – social network
Sorkin is a literary giant.
Original screenplay
winner – King’s speech
what should have won – King’s Speech
It was a great script but not best picture caliber. It was a great depiction of times and of the characters. Some of the dialogue was brilliant some other not so much. It’s really a very close race here between King and Inception but King just takes the top spot as good as Inception was it just lacked… originality in my opinion.
