I will not say “don’t go see this movie.” At the same time I won’t say, “You have to go see this movie.” This is a great looking film. It is very easy to watch and enjoy the great animation and artwork. Character models and costumes are great, as is the environment. Aside from all the eye-candy, however, this movie didn’t do too much for me.
The story and plot were, for the most part, unoriginal. (Man creates smart machines, machines create more machines, machines destroy man.) Sound like a terminator movie? Almost, except in this one there are no humans left at all! Anyways…The slightly weak story could still work if it weren’t for the dialogue. The writing was…lacking. (To say the least…) Sometimes I heard a little bit of Frodo shining through with Elijah Woods’ performance, but that could just be me. Either way, the dialogue lacked depth and definitely not convincing. At times it was just plain awkward. Also the ending, which I won’t give away because I’m such a nice guy, was weak.
The movie as a whole had an almost short-film-feel to it. By that I mean that it felt rushed at times. In my opinion, it felt like I was watching a movie made by hardcore Tim Burton fans that he decided to fund. That said, if you’re looking for a great looking movie with entertaining action scenes then why haven’t you seen it yet?! If you’re looking for more than eye candy, you won’t find it in 9.
