New Tim Burton & Johnny Depp Collaboration: Alice in Wonderland

Description of film, cast and books.

From the whimsical imagination of visionary Tim Burton comes a very anticipated movie(well to me anyway). A sequel to Disney’s Alice in Wonderland! Filled with animation, actors, and many special affects, this 3D film promises great visual appeal. The film will also be filled with an all star cast. Of course this includes Tim Burton’s long time partner Johnny Depp (who has played in now seven of Burton’s films), Anne Hathaway from the Princess Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada, Helena Bonham Carter, and Michael Sheen.

Depp will spin a twist on the cookie Mad Hatter. Hathaway appears stunning as the Snow Queen who has a Benjamin Button-backwards age issue, Carter is to be the Red Queen, and Sheen plays the iconic White Rabbit.

Now for the big question-who is to be Alice? This role is to be played by the up-and-coming Mia Wasikowska. The nineteen year old Australian actress has been seen in HBO’s critically acclaimed show, In Treatment, as well as this year’s Defiance costarring Daniel Craig.

Crispin Glover, also known as the Creepy Thin Man from Charlie’s Angels is also said to have a role along with veteran actor Alan Rickman. Carter (the Red Queen) is married to Burton and have two children with him. A wonderful actress whose filmography includes  the cult classic Fight Club along side Brad Pitt, Planet of the Apes, Sweeney Todd, two of the Harry Potter films, and this year’s Terminator Salvation.Burton is best known for his visually breath taking films like Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare before Christmas, Batman, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd, Beetlejuice, and Big Fish to name a few.

Plot

The premise of the film is set ten years post Through the Looking Glass book. Alice is once again intrigued by the White Rabbit and follows him once again down the rabbit hole to a place she doesn’t remember. The movie is filled with characters from the book Through the Looking Glass, which was never made into film.

No trailers have been played yet for the movie, but still pictures from the film, as well as cast promotion have been produced. Alice is not set to premier until next March.

Books and Disney Film

The original Alice in Wonderland was written in 1865. Alice’s character is actually based off of Alice Liddell, a girl who Lewis Carroll, the author,  had traveled with a few years before publishing the book. Many of the characters in the book were based on Carroll and friends. Many have found allusions in the book though that they have drawn symbolic links to between slavery and the economy etc. The Disney movie which actually mixes some of the first and second book’s characters and events together wasn’t made until 1951, although many cartoons and films have also been made, the Disney version has become the most popular.

Alice in Wonderland is my absolute favorite Disney film and to this day, as a grown woman I can still sit and enjoy it and be enraptured into Wonderland. And so we are left to wonder if the new adaptation set for release on March 5,2010 will be as Alice puts it as “curious” as the original.
