My Top Five Comedy Picks at The Fringe This Year

As it says – my pick from the edfringe 2009 comedy bucket!

Without the time or money that 3 days at the Edinburgh Fringe allows, here’s my pick of the 5 best shows this summer

!

Tom Wrigglesworth – Letter to Richard Branson

An amiable performer, Tom guides us through his open letter to Richard Branson about a recent Virgin Trains journey, which saw him being arrested for helping an old lady with a ticket. Funny and slightly touching, Tom brings a positive, human appeal to the fringe.

Mike Wozniak – Clown Shoes

A terrific performer, probably too clever for his early evening audience, Wozniak delights with his tales of suffering at the hands of his Dad’s ill-fated Science Roadshow. Although his tough huy screenplay, of which he acts excerpts, is amazing. Well worth seeing.

Rhys Darby – It’s Rhys Darby Night

Rhys (aka Murray from Flight of the Conchords) brings a fast paced show to the fringe. New characters such as Bill Napier, the bush ranger and Steve, the UFO group therapy leader are amusing, although its his SFX and frenetic pace which works best. His take on being disappointed at the new Transformers Film is probably the highlight of this year’s festival as he reveals just how bad the toys actually were!

Marcel Lucont – Sexual Metro

Billed as “France’s premier misanthrope and lover” (and there’s plenty to choose from!) Alex Dubus brings his superb French character to the fringe. An excellent performance from a real talent, Lucont muses on British women, towns and reveals (almost) how he lost his virginity. A real find!

 Russell Kane – Human Dressage

Not having seen much of Kane before, I was surprised at his pace, energy and excellent material. Borrowing in style from his namesake Mr Brand at times, Kane delivers a fantastic set recounting his childhood days and misery inflicted on his poor younger brother as part of our stages of dressage. Watching him cry and leap around the stage will make him the highlight of your week!
