Did Up stay in the number one position? Come find out in this article.

I made a prediction in last week’s Movie News 8 article about what would be the number one movie for the week of (6/5/09 – 6/7/09).  As I predicted, Up stayed in the number one spot for a second week.

Up is the first movie in a while to have the number one spot for more than one week.  Up made over $44 million at the box office.  I wasn’t really surprised that Up stayed in the number one spot.  Shockingly, the movie had a race to the number one spot. The movie had stiff competition this weekend with one of the new releases.

The Hangover was a close second with over $43 million.  It really gave Up a run for its money.  The numbers were close to a point where it wasn’t decided which movie would be number one.  The Hangover is a bachelor comedy.  It is about three groomsmen who lose their buddy who is about to get married.  They go through adventures just to find him.  I didn’t think this would be number two let alone give Up a run for the top spot.

Land of the Lost came in a distant third with over $19 million.  This is an action comedy starring Will Ferrell.  It’s about a doctor who goes on a dinosaur expedition.  This is the movie I thought would have been number one at the box office if Up didn’t keep the number one spot.  After seeing the trailers for Land of the Lost, it’s no shock that it didn’t take the number one spot.  It shouldn’t have even come in at number three.  A lot of Will Ferrell’s loyal fans must have seen this movie to make it be number three.  It’s not something I will check out.

The other new wide release My Life in Ruinsdebuted at number 9 with over $3 million.  Unless this is an independent movie, it didn’t fare to well.  This movie stars Nia Vardalos of My Big Fat Greek Wedding.  My Life in Ruins is about a travel guide who rediscovers her romantic side on a trip around Greece.  This is a romantic comedy.

Rounding out the top five are Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian with over $14 million at number 4 and Star Trek with over $8 million at number 5.

My prediction for next week’s number one movie is The Taking of Pelham 123 starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta.  If it’s not that, maybe Up will have a third week at number one.

Here are the top 10 movies at the box office:

  1. Up – 44.2 million
  2. *The Hangover – 44.3 million
  3. *Land of the Lost – 19.5 million
  4. Night at the Museum:  Battle of the Smithsonian – 14.7 million
  5. Star Trek – 8.4 million
  6. Terminator Salvation – 8.2 million
  7. Drag Me To Hell – 7.3 million
  8. Angels & Demons – 6.5 million
  9. *My Life in Ruins – 3.2 million
  10. Dance Flick – 2 million

Star trek went down to #5? I thought it could go up to #3 or #4. I prefer to watch a movie of “land of lost” as it sounds like a fiction movie. Am I right?

Thanks for your effort and here goes the click “like it”

Night at the Museum drops, well probably it wasn’t as good as it was expected. However the trailer was good.

Thanks for the review. Great job!

I’m not surprised Land of the Lost is third. It just doesn’t have an appeal to me — and I say that being a fan of the TV series.

I’m surprised Star Trek is down at number 5. That movie was epic.

And My Life in Ruins looks really good. I hope it does better. I’m not sure if it’s an Independant Film or not, but Nia Varalos is a legend. I adored her in My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

Well, at least they have a system to keep things in the right order :-)

I think Up deserves its spot at number one!
