Movie News 6
There is a new number one movie at the box office this week. Come find out what the new movie is.
In last week’s Movie News 5 article, I predicted there would be a new number one movie at the box office. It turns out that I was right once again. Star Trek lost the number one spot at the box office for the week of May 14th – 16th. It’s scary to keep being right like this. I really need to consider playing the lottery. LOL! It’s going to be a hard fall for me if and when I’m wrong. LOL!
As I mentioned earlier, there’s a new number one movie at the box office. Angels & Demons took the number one spot at the box office. It made $48 million. The movie is a sequel to the Da Vinci Code. Tom Hanks reteams with Ron Howard in Angels & Demons. Angels & Demons opened with little controversy as opposed to Da Vinci Code. I guess that’s why it didn’t open as well as the first one. Angels made enough to take down Star Trek, but it didn’t make anywhere near as much money as Da Vinci Code. Da Vinci Code made $77.1 million in its opening weekend compared to Angels making only $48 million. I haven’t seen this movie yet and I’m not sure if I’m planning on seeing it. I didn’t watch the first one so I will most likely skip this one.
Last week’s number one movie Star Trek slipped to number two with $43 million. It was a strong number after it’s $75.2 million opening this past weekend. Star Trek has made $147.6 million in its two-week opening. That’s really impressive for a movie that’s been out for two weeks. It should hit the $200 million mark soon. Star Trek was a close second to Angels & Demons.
Rounding out the top 5 movies are: X-Men Origins: Wolverwine with over $14 million, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past with over $6 million, and Obsessed with over $4 million. I’ve seen Obsessed and it’s pretty good. I’m glad to see that it’s still in the top 10. I figured it might have been gone by now, but it’s not.
I think Angels & Demons will lose the number one spot at the box office. I think Terminator Salvation or Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian will take the number one spot. I hope I will keep my streak up and be right again.
Here are the top 10 movies:
- *Angels & Demons – 48 million
- Star Trek – 43 million
- X-Men Origins: Wolverine – 14.8 million
- Ghosts of Girlfriends Past – 6.9 million
- Obsessed – 4.6 million
- 17 Again – 3.4 million
- Monsters vs. Aliens – 3 million
- The Soloist – 2.4 million
- Next Day Air – 2.2 million
- Earth – 1.7 million
*Indicates new movie

wonderful edition of the movie magazine. its amazing how the top number one movies come crashing down in so short a spell at the top of the charts. your preditions are always so true! so now, Angels and Demons has reached number 1 it will be nice to see how that fares. brilliant article!! i thoroughly enjoyed it.
Can’t wait for next week report! I’ll vote for Night at the Museum!
Thanks for the update, they keep me in tune with the movies.
Interesting! I am sure many Star Trek fans are disappointed in this. I have heard it is ok, but die hard fans say it is not as great as the old Star Trek!
Thank you all for your comments. I think we might be right about the movie, BC.
I\’m actually very impressed with how well this Star Trek film is performing, especially compared to the previous Trek films. It is only the second one out of 11 to break the $100 million barrier and so far it\’s projected to ultimately make around $250 million. I think all Trek fans should be happy. Then again, I only describe myself as a moderate Trekker and not diehard Trekker.
I’m not a Trekker, but I am impressed with how much Star Trek has made, ActionSammy. It’s doing very well at the box office.
I watched Wolverine. I liked it.
Thanks for checking out my column, Morgana. I’m glad that you liked Wolverine.
