What’s new at the box office? Did District nine hold on to the top spot? Find out here!

I wanted to start this column off by saying my predictions were off because the movies I predicted to be number one don’t come out until this week. When I was searching Internet Movie Database, it had other movies coming out for the past weekend. They have since updated the list and now they are coming out this week. With that said, let’s get to the movie news.
There’s a new number one movie at the box office. Inglourious Basterds claimed the number one spot for the weekend of 8.21.09 – 8.23.09. It made over $37 million at the box office. So far, the movie has made $65.1 million since it opened. It stars Brad Pitt and it’s directed by Quentin Tarantino. This is Quentin Tarantino opening movie ever. Inglourious Basterds has an international cast. It is about Jewish commandos plotting to take out Nazi leaders during World War II. I’ve noticed that the spelling of this movie title is wrong. LOL! I wouldn’t mind seeing Brad Pitt because he’s eye candy, but I don’t think this is a movie that would interest me. I’m not really into watching war movies. I think I’m going to take a pass on this one.
Last week’s number one movie District 9 slipped to number two with over $18 million. It’s made $73.5 million since it opened at the box office. I was right that it wouldn’t hold on to the number one spot. The movie is on its way to becoming a sleeper hit. In case you don’t know, a “sleeper” hit is a movie that does better than anticipated. This definitely fits in that category.
Number three is G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra with over $12 million. This movie is still hanging in the top five. Usually movies like this tend to fall out of the top five not too long after they’ve been released.
There were two other new releases at the box office. Shorts came in at number six with over $6 million. Shorts is about a young boy discovering a wish granting rock and other people want to take it from him. I haven’t seen it, but I think that kids and maybe some adults might like it. Post Grad missed the top 10. It debuted at number 11 at the box office with $2.6 million. This is a very bad debut for Alexis Bledel of Gilmore Girls and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants fame. This is a movie about a post grad trying to find a job and love. This is also a bad return for Michael Keaton who has been missing in action for a little while. Since it seems like a predictable movie, maybe that’s why no one saw it. It’s also not a real escapism for the audience because that happens in everyday life. I think Alexis Bledel is going to have a hard time being a lead actress if her movies keep debuting like this one did.
My prediction is that Inglourious Basterds may lose the number one spot. I think Final Destination or Halloween II will be number one. Horror movies seem to do pretty well during their first week and Inglourious Basterds is up against two of them. We’ll see if Brad’s movie can hang on to the top spot.
Here is the top 10 list:
- *Inglourious Basterds – 37.6 million
- District 9 – 18.9 million
- G I Joe: The Rise of the Cobra – 12.5 million
- The Time Traveler’s Wife – 10 million
- Julie & Julia – 9 million
- *Shorts – 6.6 million
- G-Force – 4.2 million
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – 3.5 million
- The Ugly Truth – 2.9 million
- The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard – 2.7 million
*Indicates new movies

D-9 definitely has a lot going for it — character development, great acting a at least a few people, awesome alien weapons; it felt a bit preachy at times at different times though
