Did G-Force hold on to the number one spot? Is there a new number one movie at the box office? Come find out here.

If you guessed that there is a new number one movie at the box office than you are right.  There is a new number one movie at the box office for the week of 7/31/09 – 8/2/09.  As I predicted in Movie News 12, if G-Force didn’t hold on to the number one spot, Funny People would have been number one and I was right.  Funny People came in at number one at the box office.  It made over $23 million.

Funny People stars Adam Sandler and Seth Rogan.  It is a dramedy about a terminally ill comic.  The movie’s mix of tragedy and comedy was not an easy sell.  The numbers were disappointing.  Audiences were more in the mood for comedies rather than tragic movies.  I’m not surprised that this movie didn’t debut well.  Whenever Adam Sandler takes on a more serious role, the movies don’t do that well.  People are used to seeing him in screwball comedies.  The studio expected higher numbers than it got for the movie.  If that’s what they wanted, they should have promoted the funnier things in the movie rather than focusing on the tragic things.  Adam Sandler is not known for drama so it was a risk to even cast him in the role of a terminally ill comic.  I’m not sure who should have been casted in the role, but it shouldn’t have been an actor who is more known for his comedies.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince held on to the number two spot.  It made over $17 million.  It has made over $255 million in two weeks.  Last week’s number one movie G-Force fell to number three with over $17 million.  It has made over $66 million in two weeks.  The Ugly Truth slipped to number four with $13 million.

The other new release Aliens in the Attic came in at number 5 with over $7 million.  It is about kids protecting their vacation home from invading aliens.  It is a children’s movie.  It stars High School Musical’s Ashley Tisdale, Robert Hoffman, Andy Richter, Tim Meadows, etc.  It’s definitely a different movie, but I doubt I will be checking it out anytime soon.

Since this was not a strong opening for Funny People, I doubt it will hold on to the number one spot.  With G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra Shorts opening this week, I think that will take the number one spot at the box office.

Here are the top 10 movies at the box office:

  1. *Funny People – 23.4 million
  2. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – 17. 7 million
  3. G-Force – 17.1 million
  4. The Ugly Truth – 13 million
  5. *Aliens in the Attic – 7.8 million
  6. Orphan – 7.3 million
  7. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs – 5.3 million
  8. The Hangover – 5.1 million
  9. The Proposal – 4.8 million
  10. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – 4.6 million
