Let’s Go to the Cinema: Once More

The appeal of watching movies at the cinema.

Image via Wikipedia

Why does the appeal of watching movies at the cinema so appealing compared to watching say, at home or purely on your PC.  Is it the crowd, the ambiance, the popcorn, drinks and other snacks?  Or is it going to the cinema is a perfect excuse to go out on dates.  All of these reasons, and many more, depending on the individual.

Back during the Black and White days, people have been fascinated with the big screen.  Think along the conventional lines of traditional old theaters, plays, Wayang Kulit shows and what have you.  The idea of watching the big screen in front, along with the others can be appealing.  Right up to the modern times, when there are High Definition screens on the cinema theaters.  There is this sudden rush of adrenaline-watch alongside the other cinema patrons.  Is the idea of watching together with a crowd totally appealing?  Here are some examples.  When there are accidents, you tend to see a crowd, and upon seeing a few people gathering, some others would join in too to check out the scene.  When you see couples fight, you see a crowd, though they are afar.  When there is a big sale going on or limited items for grabs, you see a crowd too.  Is this the appeal we are talking about…?  What makes watching movies at the cinemas so special and some have make this their number 1 past-time.

Let’s admit, for 2 tickets close to 20 bucks now, you get a big screen in front, a nice ambiance altogether (depending on the sitting arrangements and whether the seats are wide and spacious), and great sounds being wildly exaggerated with awesome 3D effects for some movie shows, the experience is totally overwhelming.  On a good day, you could even improve the mood of the persons watching with you.  It’s a great way to past the time.  So it’s one of the most awesome hobby ever. There is at least 1 movie company that I know whereby you can pre-order your drinks and snacks and they will send them while you watch the movies.  And it doesn’t take that long for them to deliver personally right up to your seat.  You just have to show your receipt and enjoy the show while having snacks and drinks with you.  However, with all these good things, there comes some unpleasant situations too.

Besides a small hole in your pockets spending movie tickets, and ticket sales have purged up over the years, movie experiences are getting better by the day.  But there are some aspects that you can’t control.  People talking loudly, even though the movie’s on, some unfortunate events of ‘body odour’ from your other movie patrons whom happen to sit besides you and the most intolerable ones in my point of view would be those that curse loudly and answer their calls, including texting whilst the movie is on.  The cellphone light can be mildly distracting and on top of it all, the cream of the cake would be those that ‘kick’ your seats.  Perfect.  And worst, you can’t even shout at that person lest the others get angry.  So, one tends to suffer in silence.

With that said, it’s a matter of choice, really.  There are times when I can wait patiently for the movies to come out on DVDs/VCDs and on days that I totally dig a particular title, I would watch at the cinema, to my discretion of those unpleasant experiences which I might or might not have.

I prefer watching movies on DVD at home. I’m not too crazy about crowds.

There is a unique appeal to sharing a movie experience with a crowd – so you’re really paying for the experience. Nice article*
