Johnny Depp: Top Eight Movies

Short reviews of Johnny Depp’s finest movies: Chocolat, Pirates of The Caribbean, Nick of Time, What’s eating Gilbert Grape, Public Enemies, Blow, Benny and Joon, Finding Neverland.

* Blow

The real life story of a notorious drug dealer. Seeing where he comes from (an unhappy family life and childhood), you find it impossible to despise him. You do not approve, but you do not detest him. Now, sympathy is hard to acquire when you are playing a character with an illegal profession, but Johnny Depp pulls it off masterfully. The movie is fun, emotional and a must-see. Penelope Cruz is OK but the show is Depp’s. Ray Liotta plays Depp’s dead and it is always great to see him on screen.

* Finding Neverland

The story of how Peter Pan’s author came to write the story after meeting a widow and her 4 sons. The author is played by Johnny Depp and the widow is Kate Winslet. Johnny Depp was nomiated for Best Actor Oscar. It won the oscar for best music. It also features Dustin Hoffman and Julie Christie. If you haven’t seen it, you missed one of the most magical stories of all time.

* Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Now, I didn’t like the 2nd or the 3rd one much but this first one is pure brilliant entertainment. It is fast, fun, funny and full of action. Johnny Depp plays the smart and quirky Captain Jack Sparrow. His evil nemesis is played by Geoffrey Rush and his partners in adventure are Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom. Ship chasing, sword fighTing, ghosts, curses, love, jokes…They are all here. Johnny Depp is marvelously hilarious. Was nominated for Best Actor Oscar. A must-see.

*What’s eating Gilbert Grape

An original and heartwarming story of a young man having to deal (Johnny Depp) with his extremely obese mother, mentally challenged brother (Leonardo Di Caprio), his awful sisters and his feelings for the new girl in town (Juliette Lewis). Great movie that made me a Johnny Depp fan. At 7.8 on IMDB, I’d say it is underrated. Yep, it is that good. From one of my directors Lasse Hallstrom who also directed Johnny Depp in Chocolat.

* Chocolat

One of the best casting ever with Juliette Binoche, Alfred Molina, Johnny Depp, Carie-Ann Moss, Lena Olin and Judi Dench. This is like a modern fairy-tale. Juliette Binoche plays the free-spirited single mother of a young daughter, who loves moving from town to town, making new beginnings and working her own Chocolate Bakery. She starts to allure everyone with her warmth and her delicious chocolate. She builds bridges between a diabetic grandmother (Judi Dench) and her grandson, helps a woman relight the fire in her marriage, helps an abused woman (Lena Olin) to find happiness… She refuses to conform, and the changes she makes in everyone’s lives really upsets the town’s old-fashioned and uptight mayor (Alfred Molina). She also befriends the gypsies and gets romantic with their leader (Johnny Depp). One of my favorite movies of all time. Lasse Hallstrom’s best : Moving, hopeful and uplifting.

* Benny and Joon

Benny (Aidan Quinn) lives with his mentally problematic sister Joon (Mary Stuart-Masterson). He is used to taking care of his sister and arranging her life around her. But when a gambling bet requires him to take Sam to their home, things change. Sam is a weird young man who loves Buster Keaton, does magic tricks and is not intimated by Joon. His friendship with Joon turns into a romantic relationship and they will have more than they can handle with Benny and Joon’s recurring problems. Sam is one of the most original characters and Benny’ love interest is played by Julianne Moore. Just lovely.

*Nick of Time

Not a masterpiece or something very original, but it is worth seeing Johnny Depp as a young father who is forced to commit a political murder to save his daughter. Plus, who here doesn’t like Christopher Walken play a bad guy? Fun action.

*Public Enemies

A recent 2009 piece about one of America’s most wanted in the 1930s: Depp plays John Dillinger, the leader of a bank robbery team. He is elegant, non-violent, graceful and actually loved by the public. His love interest is played by the beautiful French actress Marion Cotillard. The law-enforcer out to get him is played by Christian Bale. Sure this movie isn’t perfect but it is very, very good with a wonderful soundtrack. Do not miss it.

That’s my favorite Johnny Depp. Please share yours. And no, I didn’t forget his collaborations with Tim Burton. But apart from Edward Scissorhands, I don’t like his style a lot.

    Thanks for commenting, guys. Johnny is a terrific actor who is also blessed with young and beautiful looks. Love him.

    Well, I do think that it is hard to find a heterosexual woman who doesn’t like at least one version of his ever-changing looks. ;)

    Your post is a winner Zoey. I love Johnny Depp, I’m a big fan of him and his movies. I remember watching him for the first time in 21 jumpstreet. I think I was only 5 years old then. The best movie for me that he had done was the romantic comedy “Don Juan de Marco.”

    I like Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorshand. He portrays such a sympathetic character that instead of fearing ES, audiences love him and hate the townspeople even after he killed one of them.

    You definetly missed out by eliminating the Burtons. Edward scizzorhands and Sweeny Todd are two great movies. Please check out my account for new and old reviews!
