Is It a Good Thing When Classic Movies are Remade?

This article discusses the many remakes of classic movies and whether or not it should be seen as a positive progression.

Well it’s now fast approaching Halloween which led me to thinking about the movie titled the same. It’s not long since the remake of Halloween was released and I’m growing ever curious about whether or not it should be seen as a positive action.

I recognize that the era we live in allows us to make films to the best of our abilities due to the vast array of technology which is available at our disposal. I am however unsure about whether said technology and special effects actually add anything to the film.

Classic films such as Halloween, Children of the corn and the Texas chainsaw massacre have all been subject to modern day remakes, for the most part successfully. I do however tend to have the opinion that the movie was better in its original form. When the person who wrote the movie selected the actors to play the characters from his story, he had the vision of what they should look like. He knew exactly what he wanted to portray through the actors and changing that can only provide one end result, a different film entirely.

A perfect example is the Evil Dead series. I would never want to see them remade because whilst they have become more funny than scary over the years, they still have a quality that I wouldn’t want to be replaced. It isn’t about how a movie compares to modern day movies, it’s about the genius involved in making the movie when they did. It’s about that time and effort spent on each movie and how perfect they were in their own time.

I don’t think remaking movies can ever really make the movie any better simply because in the early stages of a film, the writer would base his story on what was physically possible. Thus limiting himself to whatever technology could create for him in that time period. Nowadays we have a much wider variety of options available to us and as such we tend to think outside the box a great deal more. For this reason I think that the audience would expect more from a film simply because of the high standard that has already been set by the presence of modern technology.

I personally, am not a big fan of remakes in general. They usually “fancy them up” so much that the original intent of the film is lost in special effects.

I don’t mind the added effects to the remakes. It makes them more interesting and exciting.

I sometimes wonder about the originality of people who make remakes. I, too, agree that the special effects are much better.

Three reasons why they shouldn’t do remakes.
    1. Alfie
    2. The Italian Job
    3. The Ladykillers
    The originals—classics. The remakes—rubbish!!
I could think of more, given time.
    Oh, BTW, great article—as always.

Yes, good content I enjoyed your article and yes again for special effects as in technology in the modern day.

An article worth the write. Only the original Producer/Director should remake a movie using newer technology. I shudder to think what a remake of Gone With The Wind would be like.

The lack of new ideas lately leads to remaking more and more.
