I am not much of a fan of Jason Statham, but I watched him in Death Race recently, and thought that was actually pretty good. This is the main reason I pulled this of the library shelf it was sitting on. I kind of wish I hadn’t now. The movies I usually get from the library that i’ve never heard of before are usually very good, but this just hadn’t lived up to my expectations. I guess there is a slightly bad apple everywhere, and it’s directer Uwe Boll was the worm who made the apple bad in this case.
We see a local farmer, (hence his nick name Farmer) a man raised by the whole village he lived mainly by a guy called Norick played by the Hell Boy himself Ron Pearlman. Farmer was played by Jason Statham. We see their little village run down by an animal race called Krugs, who resemble the Orks out of Lord of the rings. This is where we very quickly see an action scene.
The first action scene was about five to ten minutes in, and I felt it was far to early for it. BUT, none the less we see the movie unfold with Farmer, Norick, and his brother in law chase after the Krugs.
Of course there were the bad guys leader Gallian played by Ray Liotta, who controlled the head Krugs on horses by mind control, and other forms of magic.
Then there must be some other good guys, a king. Played by Burt Reynolds. His nephew Duke Fallow was played by Matthew Lillard. The Duke was the royal idiot, and conspired with our magical enemy Gallian, but to their annoyance they find once the king is dead the Duke’s thought of becoming king where thwarted, but not telling you how (you will have to find out how by watching the movie).
Now there where lots of action, fight scenes, and special effects. The action was ok, and the fight scenes where not. The fight scenes where badly shot, and badly directed. I think that all the credit of this such badness should go to its directer as he was most probably the one who told the camera men/women where to stand, and direct their cameras at.
I was just shocked at how bad Jason Statham had to be in these fight scenes who I have found is not this bad in fight scenes at all in everything else I have seen him in. He clearly struggled with fighters who clearly don’t have the timing he has in fight scenes.
Now I mention some other bad stuff, and a lot of this movie was ok, but the ok stuff was just over shadowed by the horrible fight scenes, and the bad acting form both Burt Reynolds, and Matthew Lillard. Please add another to that short list with Ray Liotta as well. How these three got their roles in this movie is beyond me.
Now for some more nicer news about this movie. The special effects in places where bloody awesome. We see people transport themselves from one place to another, and even through walls on the way. Who ever did these special effects needs a pat on the back from me because I have seen a millions times worse in much bigger budget, and advertised movie blockbusters.
I must admit Jason Statham, Ron Pearlman, and the special effects kept me interested in this movie. Oh and the odd shots of cleavage to helped a little. Directer Uwe Boll got that desperate I think, that he had to use special effects, and women’s natural effects up top to keep his audience from returning their DVD’s and shooting themselves in what ever store they rented or purchased the DVD from.
This movie wasn’t as bad as some I have seen. If you read my battle field Earth review, then you will find that movie is far worse than this one by far. But this movie struggled all the way through pretty much.
I hope the everyone who worked on this movie steers clear or Uwe Boll its director, as I wouldn’t want to be directed by him what so ever.
