Halloween Movies for The Kids

Kids don’t have to be left out of the fun of scary movies at Halloween. No matter what your age there is something thrilling about a dark room, a big bowl of buttery popcorn, a pillow to hide your face, and a bunch of friends screaming and jumping out of their seats in unison. Kids can participate in this with some really fun Halloween movies.

Casper

This 1995 movie is a kid-friendly ghost story that is perfect for the younger ones in your family; it features Casper, the friendly ghost. I loved this movie as a kid. This movie is great for the whole family to sit down and enjoy; it is scary at times, but it is fun and hilarious. The story is that of a greedy woman who inherits a haunted house; after some amusing attempts to rid the house of the ghosts she hires a ghost therapist who moves into the mansion with his daughter. The daughter Kat, and Casper become friends and deal with the nuisances of Casper’s three nasty uncles (also ghosts) and the mean heiress. This movie is rated PG.

Hockus Focus

I still watch this movie every year and have been quoting it since I was a child; my whole family enjoys it despite the variations in our ages (this includes my parents). It focus around an old story about three witches, who lived 300 years ago, known as the Sanderson Sisters; they are brought back to the present day when a teenage boy lights a magic candle. All of this is accomplished in a spooky, but playful way. The antics of the sisters are hilarious as they try to be evil in the modern world but are continually thwarted by some determined kids and a talking cat named Thackeray. This movie is great fun. It is rated PG.

Monsters Unleashed (2004)

These movies are a silly, entertaining way for kids to get their “monster fill.” These fun-for-the-whole-family movies bring ScoobyDoo and his disastrously hilarious encounters with monsters to life. From a trip to the appropriately named Spooky Island to monster making machines to farting contests, these movies will make you jump from you seat and laugh out loud. Both are rated PG.

Lady in White

This 1988 movie is scarier than the fore-mentioned ones and would probably be better for older children. Dealing with a murder that happened 10 years prior, a young boy named Frankie starts seeing the ghost of a young girl. As Frankie begins to see and understand this little girl better he starts to figure out her story, hopefully before anyone else gets hurt. Could her disappearance have anything to do with The Lady in White who roams the cliffs at night? Find out in this mild thriller/mystery that is just scary enough and manages to be so without the gore and horror of more recent scary movies. This movie is rated PG-13.

Another option would be to check out the Disney Channel for some scary movies made for kids. Some good ones you might find are Twitches and Twitches Too and the Halloween Town movies.

You can even find fun Halloween movies for the really little ones. Check out Pooh’s Headlamp Halloween Movie (rated G), Monsters, Inc. (rated G), or Sesame Street- Elmo Says Boo.

There are great movies out there for all ages this Halloween. Enjoy some with your family!
