Five School Misconceptions in Movies

Here are five misconceptions that people (like my little brother and sister) may have about high school because of how it is on tv and in movies and my opinions on it.

  1. Bad school lunches- Not really true.  Sometimes the lunch can be pretty disgusting and sometimes there is even what looks like some sort of mystery food that doesn’t taste, smell, or resemble anything I know.  Other times it is pretty good.  They serve decent pizza and so far this year they have served either a hamburger and fries or chicken patty with fries everyday so it isn’t that bad.
  2. Bullying- Of course there is bullying in every school but not in the way they have on tv.  Kids don’t get shoved into lockers or given wedgies anymore.  Swirlies are also obsolete.  Bullies these days go either with straight up violence and confrontation such as pushing or hitting or they go with verbal/phychological abuse which is just ame calling, exclusion from groups and making a kid just feel inadequate.  Idk if the bullying on tv ever really existed but if it did, it is obsolete now.  It is too obvious to a teacher walking by that a kid is being shoved into a locker, which brings me to my next point…
  3. Teachers are stupid or unattentive- Sometimes the teachers may be slightly unattentive or leave the class for a while but they aren’t nearly as bad as in the movies.  Relating to my 2nd comparison, A teacher will recognize a confrontation if they see one most of the times, especially an old-fashioned one.  Also a teacher will notice if stuff is thrown while they are at their desk. They are even really good at spotting texters even when the texter can do it without looking.  It is getting very hard to get away with stuff in class…Oh well, we will find new ways.
  4. The seperation of cliques- While this seems mostly true and you can go in and look at different groups that obviously seem to fit together and with no other group, a lot of people from one group such as goths or skaters will mix in with preppier kids and vice versa.  There are also kids that don’t obviously fit into any group and don’t seem to look like they fit in with the group they are with but they are accepted into it.  What style you wear doesn’t ultimately matter about who you hang out with.
  5. Popular kids rule the school- Lol there is no way in hell.  A decent amount of “popular” kids are the ones that the teachers dislike a lot so that takes out any dominance by teacher favor.  Also there isn’t any one definition of popular in my school at least.  There are the people that are typically popular in movies like the jocks, cheerleaders, etc…then there are the skaters and regular kids that are really cool. There are many sub groups that these branch off into, but I am just giving the general picture of the seperation of powers between students.
