Fake Acting

Some thoughts behind a fake performance.

he problem with some modern actors  is that they are largely fakes compared to actors of an earlier period. This does not mean that early actors were all genuine. Not all of them were Peter Lorre or Sir Lawrence Olivier. Sometimes I ask myself if I am just being nostalgic, that actors will always be the same. Some who were models or model types have ended up working for TV serials rather than making it big on the screen. There has been an association between actors who were models have a look which is too well sculpted for lead character roles. A lead role is most likely going to be taken by someone who can exhibit a range of acting that comes with changing moods or a changing character.

Model types like Ron Moss are known for their handsome looks but the face is always the same and the actor is not as expressive as others that have become more successful. I find that the actor could have benefited from being more expressive while in his serial “The Beautiful”but there is something missing, that range of acting which will inform the director if the actor is going to get out of his comfort zone and behave differently. This though does not mean that the actor is going to be truer or that there is more depth to his character than someone else.

One actor who has become truer over the years, although he has more to learn is Tom Cruise. He started out a little inhibited it seems if one can compare him with the Hitler like role he recently had.  In the beginning his acting was reminiscent of someone who was somewhat self-conscious, it looked like he would only make it as a preppy young guy just doing standard roles nothing along the lines of Johnny Depp or Robert Mitchum who made film noir riles all the more popular. Maybe this is because he wanted to be a priest before getting into acting. His  demeanor was reminiscent of how a priest would look at you always evenly tempered, never raining an eyebrow or grinning naturally.

But the problem of being real is not only an issue in the acting world it is also very prevalent in the political world as well where facial expressions are also contrived and people are pretentiously portrayed as secure in their thought and action. I would think it is okay to show doubt, that being an actor or politician does not mean being super human or without the ability to display emotions. People can break down and show grief without having to worry about what people think an actor that can get into a role can cry as if he was really involved.
