Danish newspaper Extra Bladet reports that Swedish action star Dolph Lundgren has been asked to appear in a Danish Western comedy – and that he’s interested.    A Danish Western? Well, as a matter of fact, this has been done before In 1970, there was such a film called Præriens skrappe drenge, and a sequel was made the next year – these were comedies starring beloved Danish actor Dirch Passer, and they actually took place in the American Wild West.

This new project is called Westens helte, which means “Heroes of the West”, but it’s not supposed to take place in the American West, but during the Swedish-Danish war in the 17th century. The men behind it are Lars Von Trier-producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen, Regner Grasten and director Jesper Skaaning, who think Danish comedies have stalled. They are inspired by the American comedy tradition and want to give the film the visual style of a Clint Eastwood Western.

The main villain of Westens helte is a Swedish general, and this is where Dolph Lundgren comes into the picture.    ”Dolph was impressively evil as Ivan Drago in Rocky IV,” says Jesper Skaaning, “and we thought it would be fun for him to do something different and to act in his native tongue.”

The Danish Film Institute hasn’t yet decided if they’re going to back this project or not. However, Dolph Lundgren still hasn’t acted in a Swedish movie – and it sure would be strange if he did a Danish one before a Swedish! Incidentally, Dolph Lundgren has also become a comic book character in Sweden. In the first issue of EDVARD!, he appears in a comic called Mäktige Månsson (”Mighty Månsson”) about an old, fat superhero without superpowers, who lives in southern Sweden. In the comic, Dolph shows up as himself, running Dolph Lundgren’s Fast Food in the middle of nowhere. The comic is written by yours truly, with art by Jimmy Wallin.
