District Nine Continuity

District 9 continuity 

I am making this article to present the many possible futures for the movie District 9.

I am in no way affiliated with the makers of District 9 and all information here is based on my imagination, opinions and assumptions.

1 – Next movie (Presumably District 10)

Chances – Very likely

Basically, it just means that there will be a part 2 to the movie District 9. Director Neill Blomkamp has stated 2 weeks before the release of District 9 that if the movie is a success, then there will probably be another movie.

“I haven’t thought of a story yet but if people want to see another one, I’d love to do it.”                                                                                                               -Neill Blomkamp

I’m guessing, three years from now. It seems too coincidental to me that they kept emphasizing on the fact that Christopher (Alien), will return 3 years later. Also because of the fact that Neill is working on a movie unrelated to District 9 completely, 3 years sounds reasonable for a second movie date.

Also there are many loose ends which they have not sealed completely. First of all, will Wikus (Protagonist of the movie) ever be with Vanessa (His wife) again? My guess, yes they will but how, I don’t know.

Another question that people keep asking is that, will Christopher return to earth and keep his end of the bargain to return Wikus to a human and then what will he do? In this I feel that another question has to answered first, will Christopher survive or will his son uptake his fathers commitments and return to earth instead? Its also weird that Christopher left with only his son and himself, no other aliens. It could be perhaps that his home planet is under danger of another threat, but we won’t know unless they release the next movie. Anyways, there is also another thing; will Wikus want to be a human again? I hope not…

Lastly, with all the advanced technology of the aliens, why did they not revolt for being treated like dirt? It could be that they are a very peaceful race, but it seemed stupid to me that while they were getting cannibalized by humans, they barely fought back. They could be preparing a grand plan, but I feel with their technology, they could have practically conquered Johannesburg. Their massive population boom helps too.

2 – District 9 the Game

Chances – Moderate

I only suggest this possibility because, as far as it goes, 90% of good movies nowadays have games based on them. A game about this universe will be nothing short of awesome. Cool weapons, 3 factions, no proper ending. Perfect setup for endless possibilities.

Shooter game, imagine Red Faction Guerrilla except with much cooler weapons, 3 factions and a lot of exploding bodies. You can access weapons mainly the same way, which is to collect scraps to make weapons. Also there should be a wide range of vehicles, new ones, maybe an alien tank in addition to the mach at the climax of the movie. The plot, the aliens finally revolt, as an alien, you must help free the alien race and gain support from the other aliens. Beginning, you just fight against the gangs who oppress the aliens, then later with MNU. Eventually, other nations start to help defend Johannesburg’s more crucial areas in fear of the alien race’s rising power.

A strategy game, Christopher comes back with an army to free humans by destroying corrupt governments, to allow mankind to reach a new age. The game will be made more or less like Halo wars, just cooler. There will be campaigns against each respective country. Starting off at South Africa, the aliens will conquer up towards Europe, then Asian superpowers such as Russia and china. Finally, the last stand off at the United States. I would love to see how a tank fares against that alien mach. Ending and conclusion, the humans are free to start anew and form a government that consists of the entire human race. The aliens leave the humans to progress on their own, meanwhile coming back to check on the humans every decade or so.

These are the only few Ideas I have right now, there are many possibilities in gaming for this universe.

3 – District 10, the series

 Chances – Very low

Even if its not very likely this will happen, the events of District 9 can also be seen as a pilot episode for a upcoming series TV show. This may not be a good idea but it isn’t too hard to imagine the plot. Wikus is now an alien and realizes the harshness of their lives, so he rises up to fight off gangs and MNU abuse. He also tries to unite the aliens as they mostly seem lost and aimless. Wikus is also curious of many things he can do with his new body and that may have some good plot line on it.

This series could also fill up what is happening during the 3 years wait.

4 – Novel

 Chances – Barely any

Before the release of District 10, they could release a few novels to expand the District 9 universe, but as it’s said, there is little to no chance of seeing this happen. Even if it does, It wont be a substitute for the next movie, just a little extra content.

5 – No continuity

Chances – It’s possible…

It just means that there will be no continuation to District 9; I hope this does not happen
