Take a look: at the movies made over the last decade. If you see one starring Julia Roberts or Cameron Diaz you’ll probably assume it’s a Chick Flick. And you’d probably be right. Oh, and let’s through Jennifer Aniston and Sandra Bullock in with this crowd.

So what are the basic components of a Chick Flick? The movie stars a very pretty woman, yet she’s humble and probably a bit clumsy. This starring role is of a woman probably in her twenties or thirties, although the actress playing her is usually in her 40’s. There’s an accidental meeting with a man who will become her love interest. It starts out badly, then humor ensues and the movie is wrapped up with the couple in each other’s arms, happily ever after.

Ugh. It’s just a 90 minute cliché. But it’s a money maker. As long as the world wants to see them, Hollywood will continue producing chick flicks.
But there’s another type of film flooding out of Hollywood. Low-brow comedies catered to men. These are films that include a lot of immature humor (often about bodily functions) and usually cartoonish violence. Wedding Crashers, Dumb and Dumber and Zoolander are pretty good examples.

The main culprits of Dick Flicks include: Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and Seth Rogen. It’s not that I’m contending these movies are bad (although I think many are), it’s just a new formula in Hollywood. And it’s bringing us the same actors playing the same roles over and over again (I’m talking to you, Vince Vaughn).

But my main problem with both Chick Flicks and Dick Flicks is that Hollywood is turning to over-the-hill actors (who are big money makers) to play these roles. If the main character is meant to be flighty or in some way not have his/her life together, than give us a 20-something actor. It’s okay for a young woman like Scarlette Johanson to play the role of a woman who can’t hold a job. But it’s not so cute for 42 year-old Aniston. Yet Jennifer Aniston (and Cameron Diaz and 44 year old Ben Stiller) continues to put out sappy, romantic comedies that would be better left to actors half their age (thanks, Bounty Hunter).
