Bridesmaids is an Intense Drama But with Fun Filled Moments

The movie which is a sadistic comedy cum romantic drama is a stark life like depiction of female rivalry, social clashes and frustrations of being single.

This realistic flick about life challenges has Annie as the maid of honor at her best friend Lillian’s wedding. Trouble kicks off when she meets other bridesmaids, who are wealthier and married, unlike her. Annie tries hard to keep up with them socially but fails due to the back stabbing and tricky plotting from Helen Harris III. The story with schmaltzy, dramatic and side splitting moments shows the journey of Annie from wimp to champ and how she gloriously wins back her best friend and also the love of her life.

Great Things About the Flick

The gang of girls in this movie is really very entertaining and the cold war between Annie and Helen is downright chilling. Megan’s quirky antics are a winner and there are umpteen gut busting moments in the movie. But the best parts are when Annie learns to pick herself up inspite of her failing career and all the scorns she has to hear from other women about her singlehood.

The movie opens with the protagonist Annie Walker in bed with Ted, who turns out to be her sex buddy, and is surprised to see that she stayed over till morning. He asks her to leave politely as he doesn’t like getting involved and wants to keep it casual. Annie, who is obviously a little upset with the treatment, leaves and meets her best friend Lillian Donovan (Maya Rudolph) at an eatery, then heads off to the jewelry store where she works. Annie’s life is tough as she is single and doesn’t make enough dough as a jewelry salesgirl. She shares an apartment with a Brit called Gil, refuses to move in with her mom and continues her relationship with Ted even though he is boorish and insensitive.

In the middle of all this drama, she learns that Lillian is engaged and has declared her as the maid of honor at the wedding.  But more trouble pours into her already gloomy life when she meets the extremely wealthy Helen Harris III (Rose Byrne) at Lillian’s engagement party. Helen and Annie become antagonistic instantly and start off a duel to prove who is Lillian’s best friend. She also meets the oddball Megan (Melissa McCarthy), who is Lillian’s sister-in-law and other ladies, most of whom are married.  While, Annie is returning home after a really bad day, her car is pulled over by a cop as its tail lights are broken. Annie tries to talk herself out of a ticket and manages it when the cop realizes that she is the girl who ran the bakery shop called “Cake Baby” and lives in his neighborhood. Officer Nathan Rhodes (Chris O’Dowd) compliments her baking skills and lets her off with a warning.

Annie decides to do the best she can as Lillian’s maid of honor but has a hard time as she has to exchange blows with Helen every now and then. Annie has to corordinate with Megan, Helen, Rita (Wendy McLendon-Covey) and Becca (Ellie Kemper), who turn out to be big spenders making the whole phase between the engagement and the wedding a complete mess for her. Also, Helen tries every bit to take over her place as Lillian’s best friend and splurges generously over the bride, which puts off Annie big time. The gang of girls take off to Vegas for the bachelorette party but are made to get off the flight because of Annie strange antics onboard which obviously happened after she popped a pill given by Helen.

The gang goes out for lunch together before setting out to buy their bridesmaid dresses but the fitting turns out to be a disaster after all of them puke and crap all over the showroom because of the food poisoning they catch from the treat. All this time, Annie keeps bumping into the friendly cop and spills her heart out to him about the happenings at the wedding, but at all these meeting she gets upset whenever he asks her to start baking again. They finally end up in bed one day after they grab a drink together at the bar.  Officer Nathan Rhodes, unlike Ted, is quite nice to Annie the morning after, but she dashes off after seeing the baking supplies he has set out for her early in the morning.

Annie, who is quite distressed with everything in her life by now, snaps at one of the buyers at the jewelry store and gets herself fired, but her attempts to carry on with life finally fall apart when she breaks down at Lillian’s shower. On attending Lillian’s shower she realizes that Helen stole her idea of a French theme and is peddling them as her own. Lillian asks Annie to not come to her wedding after her big showdown at the shower, where she breaks things and throws stuff, and Officer Rhodes spots her with Ted, who comes to pick her up after the accident she has because of the broken tail lights of the car.

But she gets down from Ted’s car also when he suggests that they get into action while he is driving and is finally rescued by Megan. At Megan’s home, Annie is alarmed to get an insight from her about having a fighting spirit in life, after she tells Annie how she battled bullying in school because of her weight.  Annie then tries her level best to win Officer Nathan Rhodes back but her attempts seem to fail. Although Annie is not planning to go to Lillian’s wedding, she is surprised to see Helen at her doorstep, who tells her that Lillian is missing, and the two go off to find her.

Annie meets Officer Nathan Rhodes on the way and asks for help in extremely heart warming ways even thought he tries to ignore her. He finally helps her out and they find out that Lillian is at her old apartment. On reaching there, she finds Lillian devastated because the expenditure for the wedding has skyrocketed due to Helen’s fancy ways and her father cannot afford the pricey ceremony anymore. The two friends patch up and get ready for the evening. Everything turns out well at the grand and groovy wedding, where Helen and Annie become friends and Officer Nathan Rhodes drives over to pick up Annie.

Best Moments

The scenes with Officer Nathan Rhodes in the bar are fun and the moments when Annie races her car up and down the road to get his attention are sugary sweet. Annie’s drunken act on the plane is side splitting and the scene in which the gang of girls go out to try the wedding dresses but end up crapping all over the place is a riot. Also, the bit in which Annie gets a life lesson from Megan is an eye-opener.  Lillian’s wedding right at the end is fun, classy and downright ritzy.
