Box Office Results Nine

Did Avatar lose the number one spot? Come find out in this article.

Was there a new number one movie at the box office for the week of 1/29/10 – 1/31/10?  The results are in for the movies and they are probably no surprise to anyone.  Avatar is number one at the box office again for a seventh consecutive week.  It made over $31 million at the box office.  It lost an amazing 10 percent in ticket sales.  This is really great for the movie.  I haven’t seen it yet, but it is doing very well.  I figured that it would have lost steam by now since most movies like this don’t stay at the top of the box office for very long.  Avatar has made almost $600 million since its release.  It will easily surpass Titanic as the highest grossing movie of all time.  With Avatar being nominated for Oscars, it will most likely make more money.

The results are in for the rest of the movies at the box office.  There were a couple of new releases that didn’t fare too well against AvatarEdge Of Darkness made over $17 million.  Edge Of Darkness is a revenge thriller starring Mel Gibson.  This is Mel Gibson’s first acting role since 2002’s Signs.  I thought the movie would have done better at the box office considering the movie had a good plot in my opinion.  It is about cop seeking justice for his daughter’s death.  I think Mel Gibson’s past troubles might have had something to do with the box office results for this movie.  I think I might check this movie out anyway despite the low results for the movie.

The other new release When In Romedidn’t fare any better.  It made over $12 million.  This stars Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel.  It is a romantic comedy.  This movie was heavily promoted, but you couldn’t tell what the movie was about.  I have seen plenty of trailers for this movie, but I couldn’t tell you what it is about.  I think Kristen Bell’s character wants to get married, but I couldn’t tell you that for certain.  This may have affected the tickets sales for the movie.  The audience probably wanted to go see something that they knew versus trying to figure out what this movie is about.  I think I will skip this movie until I find out more about it.

Two other movies that are quickly losing steam are Legion and Extraordinary MeasuresLegion had the worst drop in attendance for a non-sequel horror movie.  It lost 59 percent of its ticket sales.  It made over $7 million.  Extraordinary Measures fared even worse for an adult drama.  It lost 56 percent.  It made over $ 2 million.

There you have it!  These are the box office results.  Avatar is still holding on to its lead.  Two new movies couldn’t take down Avatar.  The other movies in the top ten continued to slide down on the list.  Will Avatar be able to claim an eighth week at the top of the box office?  It’s a safe bet that it will.

Here are the top 10 movies at the box office:

  1. Avatar – 31.2 million
  2. *Edge Of Darkness – 17.2 million
  3. *When In Rome – 12.3 million
  4. The Tooth Fairy – 9.9 million
  5. The Book Of Eli – 8.9 million
  6. Legion 2010 – 7.1 million
  7. The Lovely Bones – 4.7 million
  8. Sherlock Holmes – 4.5 million
  9. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel – 3.9 million
  10. It’s Complicated – 3.8 million

Avatar is the kind of movie certain mindsets hate to see Hollywood make because it enlightens minds. Wish I could share my perceptions about Legion (I did go to see it) but I can’t because I’d been working too hard and [*cough] fell asleep.
I refuse go see a Mel Gibson movie at all. But I’m not too interested in most of the themes anyway at this time. Live long and prosper!

CA, great review. A friend and I went to see Tooth Fairy with Chris Rock and we got a kick out of it. It was comical and wholesome with a touch of romance; a good flick for family viewing.
