The number one movie at the box office seems to change every week. There aren’t too many movies that stay number one at the box office for very long. The box office results change from week to week. It has been a while since a movie has stayed number one for more than two weeks at the box office. This past weekend (10/16/09 – 10/18/09) was no different. There were some new releases at the box office. One of them made it to number one at the box office. One of the new movies had solid box office results while another one had so-so results.
There’s a new number one movie at the box office. Where The Wild Things Are came in at number one at the box office with over $32 million. The movie is about a boy who creates a fictional world that consists of different creatures. The movie is directed by Spike Jonze. Where The Wild Things Are is a family movie so that might have helped the movie earn the top spot at the box office. It seems like a movie for all ages.
Another new release Law Abiding Citizen came in at number two with $21 million. The movie stars Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler. It’s a thriller about a man (Gerard Butler) who wants to avenge the death of his wife and daughter. Jamie Foxx plays the prosecutor who was prosecuting the case against the people who killed Gerard’s family. I saw this movie and it’s pretty good. I like thrillers so I thought I would enjoy watching this.
Paranormal Activity moved up to number three with over $19 million. It was number four last week at the box office. The movie has made over $33 million since it debuted September 25th. I haven’t seen this movie yet so I’m not sure if it’s any good. Audiences must enjoy it since it’s moving up at the box office. Movies usually go down after being released for weeks.
Last week’s number one movie Couples Retreat slipped to number four at the box office with over $17 million. It certainly took a big drop at the box office. I figured it would have been number two or at least number three. I didn’t expect it to drop all the way to number four.
The other new release The Stepfather didn’t debut that well. It came in at number five at the box office with over $11 million. The Stepfather is a remake of the 1987 horror movie of the same title. It stars “Gossip Girl’s” Penn Badgley. The movie is about a teenager who is suspicious of his mother’s new husband. In this version, the lead is a teenaged boy instead of a teenaged girl. I was shocked that this movie didn’t do better. Horrors/Thrillers usually have better results at the box office. More times than not, movies like this come in at number one. From the trailer, the movie looked like it could be good. I saw the original so I’m interested in seeing this one too.
My prediction for next week’s number one movie is Michael Jackson’s This Is It documentary. The tickets have already sold out for the documentary and there is a lot of buzz about the movie so I think it will do well. I hope I get a chance to see the documentary since it’s only going to be in theaters for two weeks.
Here is the top 10 list:
- *Where The Wild Things Are – 32.6 million
- *Law Abiding Citizen – 21 million
- Paranormal Activity – 19.6 million
- Couples Retreat – 17.2 million
- *The Stepfather – 11.5 million
- Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs – 8 million
- Zombieland – 7.6 million

As we live 1 hour from the nearest theatre, we hardly ever go to the movies, although my daughter is excited about the upcoming New Moon movie, next month (nov 2009)
I haven’t been to the movies for years but I love the way you review them. It makes me think of Sisket and Ebert! Great job.
Oops, that was supposed to say Siskel and Ebert. I think (?)

My granddaughter loves where the wild things are. Isn’t it amazing, critics gave it the thumbs down. Shows what they know.
We get these movies after you most times, unless they are British ones of course. Always interesting to see what’s popular on your side of the water.
Paranormal Activity would be a movie that I’m sure I would like to see. Since it seems to be doing well at the box office, it looks like a movie worth seeing. The stepfather previews looked good, but it got disappointing sales, it looks like.
I like movies and indeed I was enlightened with this post. Thanks for sharing.
I like the sound of Where the Wild Things Are. Thanks CA
