Bollywood All Time Top Grossers in History – Part I

The following are the Bollywood top grossers at the time of their release. This list consists of five movies starting from Aan in 1952 to Sholay in 1975. I will write the second part to this article with another five movies.

Aan

Starring Dilip Kumar, Premnath, Nimmi, and Nadira was released in 1952. This film was produced and directed by Mehboob Khan. This film grossed over Rs. 1.5 crores.

Shree 420

Starring Raj Kapoor, Nargis, and Nadira was released in 1955. This film was directed and produced by Raj Kapoor. Music of the film was scrored by Shankar Jaikishan. This film grossed Rs. 2 crores.

Mother India

Starring Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar, and Raaj Kumar was released in 1957. This film was written and directed by Mehboob Khan. This movie was India’s first submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It was chosen as one of the five nominations for the category in 1958 Academy Awards. This film grossed Rs. 4 crores.

Mughal-e-Azam

Starring Prithviraj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Madhubala and Durga Khote was released in 1960. This film was directed by K. Asif and produced by Shapoorji Pallonji. The movies has won one National Film Award and three Filmfare awards, and many other awards. It was official submission to Academy Awards from India. This film grossed Rs. 5.5 crores.

Sholay

Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri and Amjad Khan was released in 1975. This film was produced by G.P. Sippy and directed by his son Ramesh Sippy. This film ran of more than five years continuously in a theatre in Mumbai. It completed Silver Jubilee (25 weeks) run in more than 100 theatres and Golden Jubilee (50 weeks) in 60 theatres. The film grossed Rs. 22 crores.
