This is the movie that fans have been waiting to see for years ever since Marvel Studios promised it would happen. Hype has been reaching critical levels as a movie featuring Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr. ) , Thor (Chris Hemsworth), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) hits the cinema screens.
Basically the movies plot is Loki (Tom Hiddleston) wages war on earth with the help of the device know as the Tesseract as well as an alien race called the Chitauri. So Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) gets together a team of earths finest superheroes to help defend the earth. Although basically the movie plot is a lot simpler, as this movie is basically a movie on how the Avengers formed.
So is this movie any good could it possibly live up to all its hype? Well it does have some bad points. By far the biggest one is the alien race are just a tad dull and underdeveloped, but then I could see why they are like that as essential they just serve as canon fodder for The Avengers. And really it’s Loki that has top billing as a main villain in this movie (and what a charismatic villain he is).
I also think whilst the Hulk is my personal favorite of the heroes I found myself learning more towards the Hulk from “The Incredible Hulk” movie. Even though the current Hulk did have a very funny scene having a temper tamper scene reminiscent of a two year old. I also think that it was a bit odd that one moment his trying to kill the team then in his next and last appearance ,he suddenly starts fighting on the side of the Avengers for no apparent reason. I just think some sort if scene with hulk making a choice to fight against or with the team would have been good.
It would have also been nice to have seen the characters if however brief of. Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and Betty Ross (Liv Tyler). As leading love interests for both Thor and Bruce Banner it did feel kind of odd that they did not make an appearance in fact Betty Ross did not even get a mention.
The only other criticism I have of the movie is that Robert Downey jr is just too good ,now this may be an odd criticism of a film after all great acting is a good thing. But he really does make all the other actors in this look slightly dull in comparison. Now I know that Robert Downey jr was playing a character who is larger than life, but he made Chris Evans look about as charismatic as a block of wood. In fact I would say Chris Evans was by far the weakest of the actors in this movie even been outshone by minor characters like Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg)
Despite the odd dull performance this movie handles its massive cast really well often with massive central casts films tend to full apart. For example just think of the cinematic mess of Spiderman 3 which had no idea how to handle the size of its cast, making easily the worst of the Spiderman movies. In fact this movie has handled this large cast extremely well, and when you consider most of the Marvel fans would be kicking up a stink if they felt their favorite character was not getting their fare slice of action within the movie. And as far as I am aware 99% of fans who have seen this movie have loved this movie. I have not heard of a massive backlash from unhappy fans.
The script is pitch perfect it has plenty of action, and humor as well as many other major plus points. This is all of course thanks to the writer and Director Joss Whedon who continues his normal high standard of Sharpe and witty dialogue within his imaginative scriptwriting.
The cast are also good with some great performances from most of the people involved. I was especially impressed with both Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner who in previous movies really did not impress me, but in this movie they really shone. Special mention must go to Robert Downey, Jr and Tom Hiddleston who ware easily the best actors within the movie. When they are on the screen the movie really does sizzle, rather like the equivalent of Magneto and Professor X in the Xmen movie franchise.
Effects wise this movie is as you would expect cutting edge (although I did think the aliens could have been better). I would say it is well worth seeing it in 3D, and if possible see it on a very large screen ,as if you see it on a large TV set you will be missing out.
So did this movie live up to the hype the answer is yes it could, had this movie been handled any other way it could have been quite a different kettle of fish. Its a testament to Marvel studios having a clear and concise overall plan to thread all their movies together with the aim of making this particular movie happen. I think if we had not had this slow build up with each hero getting their own film. and some film studio just tried to jam all the superheroes together without any rhyme or reason this movie would have been totally horrendous.
This is the movie that fans have been salivating to see and I have to say it fully lives up to the hype, and I certainly am looking forward to the next movie from Marvel studios
I give this movie a 9 and a half out of 10 its a brilliant movie though its not 100% perfect.
