One of the best movies in my opinion which is also my favorite, is The Crow, starring the late Brandon Lee, directed by Alex Proyas and based on the comic written by James O’Barr. It is one of those movies that stays with you. The movie basically shows the brutal murder of Eric Draven and his fiancé Shelly Webster. Then exactly one year later through the power of ‘the crow’, Eric resurrects from the dead “to put the wrong things right”. The movie is very dark including Eric’s attire, solid black attire and crow make-up (white face black around the eyes stretching to the forehead, and down the face along with black around the lips stretching out to the face like a smile) but even in the midst of all this darkness, love is always what keeps Eric going. He can’t reunite with his true love until the bad guys are defeated. Brandon Lee plays Eric Draven in his final performance. Brandon Lee was accidently killed when a fragment of the dummy bullet was fired fatally wounding Lee. He died in the hospital a few hours later at the age of 28 (ironically during the same scene that killed the human Eric Draven is the scene that killed Lee although the real footage was not in the movie. It was destroyed).
The filmmakers do a fabulous job of getting the viewer to sympathize with Draven and his deceased fiancé by showing flashbacks of the couple together sharing beautiful intimate moments then cutting to the bad guys beating and raping Shelly or stabbing and shooting Draven. In this movie the bad guys are bad. They are murderers, rapists, and arsonists.
It is dark, and at times heartbreaking but the whole movie is a ‘good versus evil’ movie and you never forget that the guy all dressed in black with the scary make-up on is the good guy and you root for him from beginning to end.
This is also a truly inspiring movie and it is full of memorable and inspiring quotes such as:
- It can’t rain all the time
- If the people we love are stolen from us, the way to have them live on is to never stop loving them. Buildings burn, people die, but real love is forever
- Nothing is trivial
- Two people who are meant to be together nothing can keep them apart
The music in the movie is music you can feel and it plays in the movie at the times when you need to feel the loss, the pain, or the love; a wonderful score. When you combine the emotion of the movie with the hauntingly beautiful score you have a movie that you not just watch but that you feel.
