Across The Universe
An essay on how Across the Universe relates to today’s young adults.
Across the Universe effectively relates to today’s young adults. In the movie, the world’s most famous band, The Beatles, plays their songs to help make the movie Across the Universe both an educational and entertaining movie. Although Across the Universe is a movie about the 60’s, it relates to today’s audiences because of the drugs, music, and the war.
Drugs reached the height of popularity in the 60’s, giving people a way to get away from the world. In the movie scene about drugs was in the bus scene. The bus scene was about everyone doing LSD and getting on a bus and just driving around the country on drugs. Bono from U2 was the main singer in this scene. He sang “I am the Walrus” originally by the Beatles. I think this scene was put into the movie because drugs were a big part of the 60’s and even today. Without drugs becoming popular in the 60’s the United States would be a different country.
The Vietnam War was a big part of the 60’s. This relates to today because the war in Iraq is similar. Both wars were very popular, and protested by a lot of people. One of the theories on why John F Kennedy was shot was because of his plans for the Vietnam war. When we started the war in Iraq, a lot of people started hating President Bush, and most people still hate him. In the movie Lucy’s boyfriend got killed in the war. When two soldiers went to his house to tell his mom, Lucy knew what had happened. Some people can relate to this sad experience if people they knew were in the war and died. Teenagers today couldn’t relate to this movie as well if they had never experienced their country being in a war because the only way they could experience it would be movies, or the news.
Music made Across the Universe more entertaining because songs by the Beatles that fit with the movie are played. It was almost if the movie was made around the songs because a different Beatles song is played with almost everything that happens. Today, music plays a huge role in the lives of a lot of people, and the movie showed the viewers how big the Beatles were, and helped us get familiar with their music. I am glad that the makers of Across the Universe chose to have the actors sing the Beatles songs instead of just putting a soundtrack over the movie because it makes the music a bigger part of the movie. Across the Universe also explained how music gets people through their problems, like when Max gets drafted, and really doesn’t want to go to war. Without music, Across the Universe wouldn’t be very entertaining to a younger audience.
Like many movies today, Across the Universe is targeted for teenagers because teenagers spend the most on movies. Not very many movies about events 40 years ago that are targeting teenagers are entertaining. Across the Universe is both entertaining and about things that happened over 40 years ago. The war, drugs, and mostly the music make this movie appealing to teenagers.
