A Look at “The Watchmen” (2008, Zack Snyder)

No spoilers here as I, Richard Robinson, take a look at comic-book spectacular The Watchmen, based squarely on the cult 1980s comic book series of the same name. The themes are mostly adult, as in the excellent “Sin City” (2004) and text warranted an “18″ certificate.

Director Jack Snyder follows up his popular CGI epic 300 (2007) with his realisation of one of the most renowned graphic novels in comic book history. The long-awaited film debut of The Watchmen is well worth the wait and even if you have little or no knowledge of who they are or what they do, this film provides an excellent introduction of the characters through the use of impressive opening credits, with the screenplay allowing the director to cleverly paint their portrait with a suitable degree of clarity. I thought it a brave step to release a superhero film with an ‘18′ certificate but the deserved success of the film thus far has justified that move. Let there be no doubt about the fact that Watchmen deals with some complicated adult issues, some of which will be hard for some to watch but the characters are completely drawn…and as far as any conversion from literature to screen goes, that is the most important thing. I found myself gripped throughout, the presentation of the piece is an eye-opener and the narrated flashback scenes are excellently deployed, as though occurring on the pages of a book sitting in one’s lap. Colourful, violent, vibrant and splashed with Stars & Stripes mythology, I did not want Watchmen to end and am hoping for a sequel..can’t wait to see it in HD and slow-mo :-)
