Begotten (1990) – An almost unwatchable film containing scenes of God disemboweling himself with a razor blade and the spirit of “Mother Earth” being raped and killed. E. Elias Merhige is credited with writing and directing the film. It supposedly took a year to make this bizarre film. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
City Of Lost Children (1995) – A scientist who cannot dream, kidnaps children and tries to steal their dreams to stop his aging process. The movie is set in a surrealistic society with a lot of bizarre images.
Donnie Darko – A teenager is convinced by an image of a large rabbit to commit a series of crimes because the world will end in 28 days. It is hard to imagine that a movie with such a strange storyline would have such big name actors as Drew Barrymore and Patrick Swayze.
Eraserhead (1977) – Henry Spencer lives in a seemingly abandoned building in an industrial district. His girlfriend gives birth to mutant baby who cries all the time. When she finally leaves him, the crying baby slowly drives Henry insane. Filmed in black and white, there is a lot of strange images in the movie that suggest a dreamlike state.
Even Dwarfs Started Small (1970) – A German film where the inhabitants of an institution revolt against the people in charge. The results start off as humorous and turn creepy as the film progresses. The movies was cast entirely with dwarfs.
Idioterne (1998) – A group of perfectly normal people decide to act mentally retarded every time they venture out in public in order to shock and disturb people. This European film has won wide acclaim but a lot of people have found this film to be strange and unnerving.
Liquid Sky (1982) – Invisible aliens land on a New York apartment building looking for heroin. The aliens soon discover that they prefer pheromones created by the brain during sex and the sex partners of a bisexual model start disappearing. This movie is just as strange as it sounds.
Little Otik (2000) – A woman learns that she can’t have children and her husband takes a tree root and carves into the shape of a child. The woman becomes obsessed with it and treats it as a real child. The root suddenly becomes alive and has a hunger for human flesh. This bizarre film was shot in Czechoslovakia in 2000.
Naked Lunch (1991) – A bug exterminator becomes addicted to the substance he uses to kill the unwanted creatures and accidentally murders his wife. He is plunged into an existence filled with hallucinations and thinks he is a secret agent communicating with bizarre creatures. At one point his typewriter turns into a cockroach. The film is loosely based on a William S. Burroughs novel and directed by David Cronenberg. That should tell you just how strange this movie will be.
Pi (1998) – A mathematician thinks that the key to all life and existence can be found in a pattern of numbers. He tries to come up with series of numbers that predicts the patterns of the stack market and ends up being chased by important business figures. This movie was filmed entirely in black and white and is slowly obtaining a cult following.
