When Oscar nomination list was announced there was no Tintin in animated movie category. It was a matter of disbelief to many. I heard lots of people asking “why no tintin?. it was one of the best animated movies of last year.”and so on.
But I will say that was a great decision.Tintin should not be allowed in animation category. Because Tintin is not an animated movie. surprised? if you have any doubt check Wikipedia website of other movies which got nominations, they all have got this tag animated movies. But when it comes to tintin instead of animation you can see the tag performance capture movie. So tintin is a performance capture movie and not animation.
So what is the difference between performance capture and animation. A performance capture technology copies movements of a real object or human to a digitally created object. You might have seen in the making of avatar and all some people wearing a fully covered dress with some white spots here and there and performing in front of a cameras. If not check the video below.
They where actually recording the movements of those human and with help camera and devices embedded to body and then copying it to the digitally created characters. So the advantage here is that you can create more complicated movements in the movies. In animation you are actually drawing each frame either using hand as in old days or using computer as in modern days. So in effect you are creating each frame for the movie.
I believe skills required for these two kinds of movies are totally different. In animation you require a great amount of drawing skills. Although technology can help you still you have to create each frame. But in case of motion capture more technological knowledge and skills are required. You need not have to work for each frame. You can copy motions of real object. So it gives more flexibility and may be perfection.
But it will be unfair to allow performance capture movies to compete with animated movies . So may be in coming years we will get a new category in Oscars. The best performance capture movie.
