He meets a shinigami called Kuchiki Rukia. She is sverely injured at one point and Ichigo takes the decision to help her. When she tells him that if he stabs her sword through himself he hesitates. He then decides to help her. He then transforms into a substitute shinigami. He defeats the monster( Hollow) which feeds on human souls. The shinigami are Death gods or Soul Reapers.
