The Hobbit (Do You Have Big, Hairy Feet?)

The Hobbit (or there and Back Again) was written by the brilliant J.R.R.Tolkien and was published in 1937.

This wonderful children’s fantasy followed the adventures of Bilbo Baggins – a simple Hobbit; who is hired by Gandalf the wizard and 13 dwarves to reclaim The Lonely Mountain and its treasure from the dragon Smaug.

This amazing book was then followed by the incredible trilogy that was Lord of the Rings. Split into three volumes: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of The King – this phenomanal novel is the second best selling novel ever written, selling more than 150 million copies.

If you have been living on another planet, you will not be aware that Peter Jackson, a New Zealand film director and producer took on the mammoth task of bringing J.R.R.Tolkien’s middle earth to the big screen; and boy, did he do an amazing job.

The first in the trilogy being released in 2001, the second in 2002 and the third and final film released in 2003. Each of these films has much to offer any movie fan and if you have never seen them then you really should check them out.

And so in late 2012 we will once again be taken on a journey that was written more than 80 years ago as Peter Jackson brings the book to life.

The principal character (Bilbo Baggins) is a Hobbit.

Hobbits are (according to Tolkien) relatives of the race of men, they stand anywhere between 2 and 4 feet tall, have rather large hairy feet, love to wear bright clothes and although they are generally shy creatures they can be capable of showing great bravery (as is clearly seen with Bilbo in The Hobbit).
