Elena Undone- Movie Review by Erin Miller
Was Elena Undone a good movie to watch and how was it so?
Elena Undone is a movie that was made in 2010 if my memory serves correct. I only recently watched it though. Anyway, this movie is about a pastor’s wife named Elena and a lesbian writer named Peyton.
The film opens up and it is almost like a documentary. That’s what I thought it was at first until I the show went on. Anyway, in the “documentary” parts it just shows you how love can find you in many blind spots and how it is never expected- you know, all that hopeless romantic crap!
Getting back to the plot of the film, Elena is married to a homophobic pastor. This pastor husband of hers bashes gays so much and claims all the usual lines that idiotic homophobic people use in order to spread their discrimination and hate. The lines are : “Homosexuals think they are entitled to “special rights”.” Or even “Homosexuality is wrong because it is not “pure love,” and on and on. Basically the pastor is an ignorant jerk, like most people I know!
Elena doesn’t agree with her husband’s remarks and she always gets in trouble for it. Her church going friends claim she’s wrong and weird simply because she sees the hate for what it really is, and because she hasn’t conceived a second child from her husband yet.
One day Elena meets Peyton at an adoption agency. I watched the movie recently but I forget what the second meeting was. Still, Elena and Peyton form a good friendship. Elena also reveals to Peyton that she was once a really good photographer and offers to take a new picture of Peyton for her books.
Eventually their friendship forms into an affair and they end up falling for each other. However, like most crazy housewives discover, keeping their lesbian lover a secret doesn’t last long and the truth gets out. So now Elena has to choose between her husband who she didn’t even love in the first place or Peyton, the one she has fallen for.
I rate the movie a 6 out of 10.

It was a good flick but at the same time not realistic. Housewives who find a lesbian are generally only experimenting (Aside from the rare few, but that’s few and far between and yet still a disaster…) and end up hurting their lovers because sometimes their lover didn’t even know about the spouse. Even if the lesbian lover does know about the spouse it usually never ends well at all!
The above paragraph is my own experiences and may not fit everyone. I also know the above paragraph to happen to a lot of people I know and that’s what I was generalizing. If a person has a happy relationship that blossoms from this, good for them. I wish them luck. However, it isn’t always so happy.
I’m glad the movie had a happy ending to me because that is different from real life but unfortunately it doesn’t always happen that way…

nice one – thanks
Hi Erin,
You know what’s interesting? Since we made “Elena Undone” we’ve received so many messages from women who are in or have been in exactly the same spot. I myself (the character of Elena) made the choice to follow my heart and make a very difficult decision, but in the end the right one. At the age of 52 I fell in love with a woman (Nicole Conn) and realized I’d never actually been in love before – I also found out I was open to real love, no matter what package it came in. I had been straight my whole life, although vehemently supported equal rights – I had just never considered a woman as a romantic partner. To make a long story short, I now know many women who have followed my same path to great success, and many who are still struggling. So your comment about it always ending up a disaster is not accurate, just sometimes, like so many other relationships. And the film is realistic, because it’s based on a true story. When we made the film we wanted to send the message that real love can happen at any time – it can be right around the corner – you just have to keep your eyes and your heart open.
