Wolverine Worth The Wait?
Arguably the most interesting of the X-Men characters gets his own film. Logan aka Wolverine was born with the powers of a wolf but also a good heart. Can he resist the temptations to be bad and use his powers for good?
Adequate prequel to the X-Men trilogy which might have been better served had it actually been made in line with the actual timeline of events. Hugh Jackman, also a producer on this project, returns to the role which earned him worldwide recognition. He is Logan, aka Wolverine, a mutant with the abilities of a wolf that include claws that protrude from his clenched fists when angry. We see him as a child for the first time and are told a lot about his relationship with his half-brother who grew up to become Sabretooth, the feline beast who was part of Magneto’s motley crew of bloodthirsty mutants in the first X-Men movie (Bryan Singer, 2000).

Early events show the two on the run from their childhoods and promising to be there for one another through thick and thin. As young men their abilities make them perfect for the corp, fighting wars on behalf of their country for many years as their mutant ageing process allows them more youthful years than humans. Then later, under Colonel William Striker (Brian Cox), Wolverine and Sabretooth (Liev Schreiber) find themselves on missions whose morality is questionable and whilst his sibling revels in the carnage and mayhem, Logan realises that he no longer wants to be a member of this team, much to the annoyance of Striker and Sabretooth. Needless to say they make life difficult for our hero and when he loses the most important element in his life, the one he loves, Striker comes to him with an offer which he could have refused: allowing his entire bone structure to be coated with indestructible liquid metal which, upon cooling to form solid metal, can’t be destroyed by anything other than itself or by extreme heat.

You can sort of guess what is going to happen next. We are introduced to a number of new mutants in Wolverine though none suffer more from their under development than my personal favourite X-Man Rene LaBeau aka Gambit, a New Orleans hustler whose special ability is lighting stuff up and making it explode on impact. In the cartoon aired during the 90s he always carried a deck of cards for that reason, they were his weapons of choice: light, numerous and fits right in your pocket. He went on to become a rogue member of the X-Men much in the same way that Wolverine came to be, both having chosen Professor Charles Xavier’s school for the gifted in preference to domineering ideals of Magneto or the deception of Striker. Kudos to Hugh Jackman though who has taken to the role quite well considering its historical comic book magnitude, Lord knows he’s had enough practice!
