The Bourne Ultimatum

How the popular film and the trilogy performed.

The Bourne Trilogy was completed this year when The Bourne Ultimatum was released in cinemas worldwide. In this essay I am going to write about The Bourne Trilogy, but more specifically The Bourne Ultimatum, and why it was as successful as it was.

The first film of the Bourne story is called The Bourne Identity and the plot of the story is that Jason Bourne (played by Matt Damon) is found in the Mediterranean Sea on a stormy night by a fishing boat. A fisherman with a scalpel finds two bullets in his back and a miniature laser device in his hip. The laser reveals a Swiss bank account number. Jason Bourne chases down the mysterious bank vault and discovers many passports – all with his picture – and a huge pile of cash. He finds a travel partner called Marie, and also finds out someone is trying to kill him.

In the Bourne Supremacy a CIA agent is killed during an operation and a fingerprint of Bourne’s is found at the scene. David Webb (which was the agent’s real name) has been living underground for several years with his girlfriend Marie. He comes out of hiding when he is almost killed in India.

The final film is The Bourne Ultimatum. Bourne is once again brought out of hiding, this time by a London-based reported called Simon Ross who is trying to unveil Operation BlackBriar – an upgrade from Project Treadstone – in a series of newspaper columns. Bourne sets up a meeting with Ross and realises, instantly they’re being scanned. Information from the reporter stirs a new set of memories, and Bourne must finally find out about his past whilst dodging The Company’s best efforts to kill him.

Most reviewing sites gave the film at least 4 out of 5 stars, which shows that The Bourne Ultimatum must have been successful, personally I thought the film was great, the storyline was good and the action scenes were thrilling, however not everyone found the film like this. Some people found the action scenes too jerky and blurry and didn’t know what was going on; some people even felt that the film was too repetitive of the previous films, with some scenes even being repeated. However a lot of people felt that it was the best film to be released this year. One reviewer said “Live Free or Die Hard was great fun, but there’s nothing else quite like THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM in theatres this summer. That alone is a reason enough to go and see it. The fact that it’s such a well made film and wraps up the trilogy’s loose ends with such style and fun, it’s the icing on the proverbial cake”.

The main reason that it was successful is because people who had seen the previous two films wanted to know how the story ended. I think that it did deserve its success worldwide because it was original and exciting. The film cost $130 million but it made a worldwide sum of $285 million which shows that it must have been successful. According to most review sites, it was the best movie released all year!
