John McClane is a detective/police officer and role model. He has worked in both Los Angeles and New York. He has promoted numerous times but not for kissing up to his superiors. He does what is necessary to get the job done regardless of whether or not it breaks any regulations. You will find him most of the time arguing with his superiors. His superiors often do not like them his attitude along with his recklessness.
Sgt. Al Powell befriended him when Nakatomi Plaza was held captive along with his now ex-wife, Holly Gennero, who can depend on him when hostages are involved. He uses the resources available to find a way to save innocent people. Despite what is going on you know he is thinking of his wife and kids. McClane is always on the outs with his wife.
McClane has some habits; he is a chain smoker and almost an alcoholic. The one thing McClane does not want to be is a hero, but often it falls on him to be the hero, because no one else will take the steps necessary to do what really needs to be done. He pays attention to what is going on and knows what is at stake. He risks life and limb but he takes out the bad guys and he gets very upset when large amounts of innocent people die.
One of the worst things that can happen to him is deciding whom to trust, even when they appear to be on his side. McClane listens to everyone and then decides what to do next. He does not like it when he is left out of what is going on. When that happens he makes his own rules, and ultimately becomes the hero because everyone else is looking out for their own interests.
