Natural Born Killers: Don’t Kill The Reviewer

The film should be on more often.

Shit! Shit! And shit! Having one unfortunate evening where Catwoman was on, but Film4 sensed a mass-audience throwing up to the agony inducing Catwoman and promptly switched tracks. What they put on instead was something much better and oh so better directed—Natural Born Killers shot onto the screen and gave sweet relief from the stomach churning, cheek cutting (nicely worded, considering the content of Natural Born Killers is screamed at you) agony fest that was Catwoman.

The film opens with Mickey Knox (Woody Harrelson) and his wife Mallory (Juliette Lewis) in a roadside café in the New Mexico desert…..I would continue, but it seems fitting to sum the film up in a few words instead of telling you the plot bit by bit. The film plot goes along the lines of following the two characters mentioned above as they kill people along with the film revealing specks of what makes them both click to kill. Also we have a roving reporter played by Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) for good measure and what it gave was well worth the chance viewing—chance brings great things and this film was one of the gems with its hyped-up feel to that of Fooly Cooly (the comparison in my mind works). The use of changing the filming style helps convey certain scenes with a greater sense of darkness—taking a flashback sequences involving how Mickey and Mallory met, the flashback is done like a 50’s sitcom with it beginning as a light affair and then transforming into something unexpected with the change in filming style and what being said. Brilliantly dark and disturbing when you mix rape and abuse in a sitcom setting that gives hides away the scary side of the human condition.

The whole film is great to make you think after you finish watching it all the way through. With great performances, direction and editing all working into one nutty film of playing around with the audience in places and making you want to shout out “What the hell!” in the good way of course. If you get stuck with this film, then watch it and watch it again, just so you can get a better idea of everything….while enjoying how Woody Harrelson looks on the poster with those bottle cap sunglasses…..has the makings of cool anime character.

People who claim this film encouraged killings are wrong on so many levels.

Thought of the Day: September 6th:

If the world ended tomorrow in a sudden collapse from a virus that only killed 99% of the world population…..I wouldn’t mind to have peace and quiet for a lifetime.
