James Bond – After Meeting The Queen It’s Back to Judi Dench!
In the new James Bond film Skyfall Daniel Craig gets back to business with 500 extras and 300 crew – and that’s just for one small scene. Then instead of greeting the Queen on Olympics night – he meets Judi Dench on disaster night.
Bond is coming back and this time actor Daniel Craig promises it will be Bond with Bells on. His first outing in Casino Royale was a smash-hit but the second film Quantum, was downbeat - in tone and takings.
Now Skyfall is promoted as a return to form for the 50yr old franchise. Craig himself is possibly the best Bond since Sean Connery but there is a distinct change of style. Ian Flemming who created James Bond in his string of novels was old school, public school and independently wealthy. He wanted an actor with a similar background so Connery had to put on some airs and graces.
Flemming’s James Bond had monogrammed cuff links, savile row suits and a commanding air. To begin with he was hugely disappointed by the choice of Sean Connery to play his hero. “A Scottish milkman?” he squirmed. Not what this Eton educated, son of a long established banking dynasty had in mind at all.
But Connery seemed to fit the bill eventually and when a series of huge royalty cheques came his way, Flemming was quite pleased.
It’s easy to imagine his reaction to Liverpool born Craig. For someone like Flemming, Liverpool isn’t just on the wrong side of the tracks, it’s on another planet. Nevertheless Craig has been accepted as the hardest Bond yet. Stripped to his trunks and coming out of the sea he switched on a generation of women of a certain age.
Maybe, and it’s almost a hanging offence to say it, he had the same effect on the Queen. Anyway, her majesty agreed to actually meet and speak to an ordinary person as part of the magnificent Olympic opening ceremony. So long as that person was James Bond. On film, she said “Good Evening Mr Bond.”
The effect on the royal hacks of the UK press was orgasmic. For them, with that moment alone, she stole the whole show.
In Skyfall Bond has to answer to M, the fabulous Judi Dench, after the villains have blown up MI6, the British Secret Service. Craig says the film for a lot of the time is about Dench, “What she represents as the head of MI6, her morality.” Together Bond and M have to rescue the country from dastardly villains.
Daniel Craig carries it off well. By his choice he is not exactly like the original Bond created by Flemming. Cold, brutal and unsentimental.
He is Bond with an occasional smile, a ripped shirt, and union jack underpants. Gucci of course.
