“Gamer”, Hopefully Not The Real Future of Gaming
A quick movie review of “Gamer”, by Christian A. Miles. Seen opening night in Hattiesburg, Mississippi at the GRAND theater.
Gerald Butler has played some legendary roles in his day. From the role of Dracula, to the Phantom of the Opera. He’s played Beowulf, and even a womanizer in the recent film “The Ugly Truth”. So it’s not a surprise that Gerald Butler would be the head of a futuristic action film, playing a convict on death row, being played by a 17-year-old boy. It seems a bit complicated. The entire film pulls you in from the very beginning. Introduces you to the idea and ideas behind the game, the “Slayers”, a virtual computer game in which someone takes control of an actual person. This same idea of killing death row inmates in reality as been worn out for the last few years, with movies like “The Condemned” and “Death Race” using the same ideas and story lines. “Gamer” is nothing short of being non-original.

The real highlight about this movie, maybe the only real highlight is found in Michael C. Hall. He plays the sadistic, quirky creator of the game “Slayers”, as well as a disturbing reality control game called “Society”, in which you are exposed to throughout the movie as well. Violence, sex, and language fill the screen throughout the entire picture, but Michael C. Hall keeps you laughing with his sarcasm, and evil that he brings to his character. He seems to have the fun love able bad guy down pat, as far as this role, and his ongoing role in “Dexter”.

Yes, Dexter seems to be an up step from this movie. Although, I did enjoy the movie at most parts, and found it to be a bit disturbing. The fact that reality television and technology are growing at fast rates in the present, does make the ideas behind “Gamer” seem more realistic in the future. But the movie at the end of the day, was a waste of a night ticket at the movies. Maybe matinee, if you’re hoping to help Michael C. Hall and Gerald grow in the box office, but for the most part: wait for DVD or Blue Ray, and save yourself a little bit of money for the next movie from Gerald Butler. For the most part, I’m disappointed in Gerald Butler for taking on the role. He needs to save his acting skills for the more legendary characters in the film industry, because we’ll definitely spend more towards those in the box office.
